Calcium Deficiency, Fluoride and Weight Loss

Calcium is essential to all living organisms, and is the most abundant mineral found in the human body. It is responsible for building bones, normal growth and development, cell structure, muscle contraction (including keeping the heart beating), central nervous function, regulating your metabolism, and a number of hormone secretions (particularly those associated with the thyroid and parathyroid glands).

Fluoride ingestion reduces intestinal calcium absorption, and for a child or an adult who already has a calcium deficiency, its toxic effects can be even worse. Studies show that children with a calcium deficiency had more severe and complex toxicity from fluoride such as bone disease (such as rickets and osteoporosis), bony leg deformities and tooth decay or cavities.

Symptoms of a calcium deficiency include skeletal abnormalities such as osteopenia, osteomalacia, osteoporosis and rickets, premature births, some forms of cancer such as colon and breast cancer, pallid skin, tiredness, muscle aches and twitches, insomnia, premenstrual cramps and high blood pressure.

34 million Americans are considered to have the premature form of osteoporosis called osteopenia. This increases the risk of fractures in the hip, spine, wrist, pelvis and ribs. These diseases are now affecting children as young as 12 years old; not just the elderly anymore.

It is recommended that drinking water with less than .5 ppm of fluoride (click here to learn how to filter your drinking water from fluoride) and increasing calcium intake provide 100% protection against the toxic effects of fluoride, including fluorosis, improve PMS, lower the risk of kidney stones, and protect you from some forms of cancer. Other factors that can increase a calcium deficiency include excess protein (such as protein shakes and supplements) and coffee, which can excrete calcium through the urine and also decrease its absorption.

Calcium is also associated with weight loss. Recent studies show that it may help with fat loss, excretion of dietary fat and prevent fat storage, reverse gradual weight gain that comes with aging, raise metabolism, and reduce the symptoms of PMS (which can cut down on cravings) – even more effectively then popular weigh loss drugs, which have some serious side effects.

Regardless of exercise level, a recent study showed that individuals on a high calcium diet had an average weight loss of 24.6 pounds in 16 weeks. Increasing calcium intake could reduce the risk of overweight substantially, perhaps by as much as 70 percent. It's thought that the more calcium there is in a fat cell, the more fat it will burn.

Another way calcium can help you lose weight is that it supports your metabolism, and helps with the production of thyroid hormones. And underactive thyroid and lack of the proper thyroid hormones can lead to hypothyroidism, and make it very difficult for you to lose weight.

When getting calcium from dietary sources, it’s recommended to choose low fat dairy only. High-fat dietary calcium can actually lead to obesity. I recommend 1% milk, cheeses without additives and preservatives (I like Tilamock cheese), low fat sour cream (watch for additives) and all natural ice cream. Frigo Light String Cheese and Laughing Cow wedges are also excellent low fat sources of calcium. Watch out for yogurt & cottage cheese. I have seen cottage cheese show up with a high ppm of fluoride, and yogurt can have gelatin which can be high in fluoride.

It’s also important to get sufficient vitamins that enhance calcium's absorption, and maintain a proper balance of magnesium. Too much calcium can actually cause a magnesium deficiency. For a good magnesium supplement, I recommend Source Naturals Magnesium Malate 1250 mg, 360 tab It can help prevent Aluminum Toxicity by removing aluminum from your body (including aluminum deposits in the brain), and is also helpful in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Fibromyalgia, Blocks fluoride absorption in intestines, TMJ, Repetitive Strain Injury, Muscle Twitches/Muscle Tension, Heart Palpitations, Mitral Valve Prolapse, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Numbness, Tingling, Zaps, Chest Tightness, Inability to take deep breath, Bone and Joint Health, Dissolves Gallstones, And Lowers Histamine.

If you’re not getting enough calcium from diet alone, I recommend Good n' Natural Calcium 600+Vitamin D 125 I.U., 100 tab which includes vitamin d for enhanced calcium absorption.
