The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine and the amino acid tyrosine and convert it into the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Every cell in the body depends upon thyroid hormones for regulation of their metabolism. 
Fluoride interferes with this process in many ways.  It is an endocrine disruptor and can mimic TSH, it can slow the production and output of (T4) and (T3), and it can compete for and displace iodine, compromising it's uptake to the thyroid gland.  The thyroid hormone cannot be manufactured without iodine.  This fluoride uptake can result in it accumulating and concentrating in the thyroid gland, causing further issues - possibly even thyroid cancer.  A report dating all the way back to 1955 shows a 400 percent increase in thyroid cancer in San Francisco during the period that the city has had fluoridated drinking water.

Fluoride also causes increased goiter prevalence.  A goiter or goitre usually occurs when the thyroid gland is not functioning properly.  Sodium Fluoride was first discovered to cause a goiter in 1854, when it was given to a dog over the course of four months. A study in Africa found that as little as 1 to 2 ppm of fluorine can cause serious disturbances of general health and especially in normal thyroid gland function. This is not a lot of fluoride; the current max EPA standards of drinking water is 4 ppm.  In 1946 it was determined that all fluoride compounds, both organic or inorganic, can inhibit thyroid hormone activity. Fluoride is so effective at inhibiting thyroid function, that it was once used in medicine to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

These thyroid disturbances caused by fluoride may eventually lead to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), making it hard for you to lose weight.  Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include:  Fatigue, Weakness, Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight, Coarse, dry hair, Dry, rough pale skin, Hair loss, Cold intolerance (you can't tolerate cold temperatures like those around you), Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches, Carpal Tunnel, Constipation, Depression, Irritability, Memory loss, Abnormal menstrual cycles, and Decreased libido.

The best thing you can do to prevent and reverse the harmful effects of fluoride on your thyroid gland, thyroid hormones and your metabolism is to avoid it. This is easier said then done - fluoride is everywhere. Much of your fluoride exposure can come from your drinking water, even if you're on a well. The best way to block it from your drinking water is to purchase a reverse osmosis system, which will filter out fluoride and other toxic contaminates.

Another simple way to avoid fluoride is to use fluoride free toothpaste. Fluoride can be absorbed through your mouth and saliva glands, and there is also a chance of swallowing it: Tom's Of Maine Natural Tartar Control and Whitening Toothpaste - Fluoride Free Peppermint, 6 Units / 6 oz is an excellent brand of fluoride-free toothpaste; I have been using it for over a year and my teeth have never been whiter.

Despite it's claims for weight loss, I also recommend avoiding all tea - it can be loaded with fluoride. Also try to stay away from pills and foods with gelatin in them, such as yogurt, jello, jelly, Bavarian cream donuts and sometimes unsuspected foods; be sure to check ingredients.

Sea Salt has gained much popularity over the past few years - I do not recommend this for those that are sensitive to fluoride or are trying to lose weight. Sea salt can be very high in fluoride, depending on where it comes from. I have seen several reports listing the fluoride content of ocean water, most range from 1.2 ppm to an upwards of 17 ppm. Himalayan Sea Salt seems to be one of the highest in fluoride.

Some sources of fluoride are unavoidable at times, and can come from beverages prepared with fluoridated water, food (anything prepared with fluoridated water such as bread, sauces, canned products, fruits and vegetables, including organic products and more), some prescription drugs, non-stick coatings on pans, baking sheets and other cookware, and the air we breath. To counteract this, the first thing you can do is make sure you correct any Iodine deficiency to remove fluoride build up, prevent suppressed thyroid function, lose weight and start feeling better.  I recommend Now Foods Potassium Plus Iodine, 180 tab which supplies a safe dose of Iodine and also supports electrolyte balance.
